The famous Pantiles were started in 1687 and the town continued to flourish during the 18th century with Beau Nash of Bath becoming Master of Ceremonies for the town, organising a series of sumptuous seasons. In the19th century the town grew with the middle classes and professional people finding it a highly desirable place to live and Decimus Burton, architect and planner, created a new garden city that was the fame of Victorian England.
